College Remedies 4U - Navigate your college options
In 2008, Gloria Ponce Rodriguez founded College Remedies 4U in an effort to assist Fresno area students to prepare for college.  Gloria has 17 years experience in higher education with an extensive background in multicultural outreach, college recruitment, admissions, financial aid, registration, retention, advocacy, public speaking, training, event planning, and a track record for increasing parent involvement.  Her special interest and expertise is assisting first-generation students to attend Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI).  Her commitment is to educate parents and students in preparing for college and encouraging economically distressed students to pursue the "American dream" to obtain a higher education, live a quality life, and be productive citizens in society.   Today,  many parents, educators, and students   throughout  the country continue to call Gloria for guidance and resources to higher education.

Having grown up in one of Fresno's under served areas, Gloria learned first-hand the obstacles Hispanic and African American students from poverty-stricken areas face in obtaining an education. Brooking's Institute released a study ranking Fresno as the #1 city in poverty, ahead of New Orleans, Louisville, and Miami. She is very sensitive to the needs of economically distressed communities.   Gloria faced many adversities growing up in West Fresno.  She dropped out of high school to work and help her mother raise her siblings, but her mother encouraged her to pursue her education. Gloria enrolled in a program and received a General Educational Development (GED).  However, at the age of 37, Gloria realized she needed more in her life, and enrolled at Norfolk State University and, while working full time and maintaining a household as a single parent of a special needs child, obtained both her Masters and Bachelors in 5 1/2 years .  She too, is a first generation graduate from an HBCU.

Ms. Ponce Rodriguez holds a Masters Degree in Urban Education, Guidance & Counseling and a Bachelor of Science Degree in  Studies with an emphasis in Special Education/Psychology, both from Norfolk State University. She is also dedicated to her  Sorority "Delta Sigma Theta Inc." and  works with her Sorority Sisters in bringing positive change to the community.

I Stand Here Latina!
by Gloria Ponce Rodriguez

I stand here Latina, Latina am I
brown cinnamon is my color, Black coal is
my hair, almond shaped eyes is my beauty,
but I stand here in no despair.

Though,  I'm a flavor of three
different continents,
I stand here in perfect confidence!

Promoting education- that is I
To instill the importance of another side.
You ask me Why? Well, why not reach
for the sky!

I stand  here Latina, Latina am I
without education, I did not rise
I had many obstacles in front of my eyes
I managed to overcome the trail that lied

NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY
gave me that Spartan Pride!
So, I say BEHOLD to the Green and Gold!
Pari me, you are my gold

I stand here Latina, Latina am I
Strong, smart and beautiful
THAT, I no longer hide,
I'm a proud - a very proud
Hispanic American Women
who has confidence and Pride!
(Thanks to an HBCU- NSU graduate BS & MA)
